Occidental’s long tradition of national
award winners dates back to 1907, when Clarence Spalding was selected as
Occidental’s first Rhodes Scholar – just five years after the scholarship
program was launched. Since then, Oxy students have compiled an enviable
record of success in winning such highly competitive, prestigious, and
often lucrative awards. Occidental faculty and administrators are
committed to helping students compete for a wide range of national
scholarships and fellowships.
How Does the Process Work?
Almost every award requires students to
work with a designated faculty sponsor who nominates finalists to national
committees. This sponsor works with applicants to craft strong
applications and proposals suited to the award in question. Many on the
faculty assist with preliminary interviews and reading drafts of the
application.
The proposal process differs for each
award, but all awards and fellowships require candidates with outstanding
academic records. Each award also demands an application with well-written
proposals and personal statements.
It is vital to begin the application
process early. Occidental students are strong candidates for these awards
when they plan well in advance and dedicate themselves to the process.
