The mission of the Community Outreach
Council (COC) is to promote Occidental's engagement with the community,
particularly those educational and community-based groups whose missions
are compatible with that of the College. One of the chief objectives of
the COC is to ensure that the College makes the best use of its limited
resources dedicated to outreach programs.
All requests for assistance for
off-campus community groups - whether for meeting or event space, food
and beverage service, or other support - must be reviewed by the COC.
This policy applies to requests made directly by off-campus groups as
well as requests made on behalf of off-campus groups by Occidental
organizations. In considering such requests, the COC is guided by a
clear set of service priorities. Made up of representatives from the
President's office, Community Relations, the Center for Volunteerism and
Community Service, Conference Services, Campus Dining, the offices of
Student Life and Admission, and the Urban and Environmental Policy
Institute, the COC considers requests for assistance at its regular
biweekly meetings.

Mission Statement
The Community Outreach Council (COC)
promotes and encourages Occidental's engagement with, and outreach to,
the local, regional, and national communities of which we are a part.
The COC was created to work with educational and community-based groups
of all types whose missions are compatible with that of the College.
Strategic Objectives
- To establish a clear set of
priorities to govern the operation of the COC and to guide how the
College's limited resources for outreach are used.
- To develop written policies and
procedures for the use of College facilities and resources by
off-campus groups that submit requests to the COC.
- To strive to ensure that Occidental
makes the best use of its limited resources dedicated to the
outreach programs.
- To increase communication among
campus constituencies who are working with community-based
organizations.
- To increase off-campus awareness of
Occidental's community outreach.
Service Priorities
- Students, faculty and staff. (All
COC interactions with off-campus groups will reflect this
fundamental Occidental priority.)
- Groups that serve potential
Occidental students, particularly students less likely to be aware
of Occidental.
- Community-based groups from the
greater Los Angeles area.
- Other off-campus groups,
particularly those that contribute to the education of Occidental
students in some tangible way.
