The Council for a Livable Campus’s (CLC) mission is to foster a more livable campus by reducing our impact on the physical environment and by improving safety and health for all who live and work here and in our neighboring communities. We seek to accomplish this in a manner that is cost-effective, equitable, and socially just.

Strategic Objectives

  • To increase awareness, change, and action on ways to prevent pollution, improve environmental quality, conserve resources, and undertake more sustainable forms of development.
  • To support existing environmental policies and programs and promote new ones where needed, in such areas as purchasing, pesticide use, etc.
  • To integrate these issues throuh innovative, integrative, multidisciplinary academic, research, facilities management, and community outreach programs.
  • To identify priorities while considering need, financial feasibility, impact, and staff resources.
  • To identify external funds that enhance existing efforts and in support of new projects.
  • To identify barriers which restrict expansion of existing efforts and implementation of new policies and promote solutions.
  • To periodically publish a “State of the Oxy Environment” Report that summarizes the goals, target indicators, accomplishments, and future needs for implementation of Occidental’s environmental mission.

Programmatic Goals

Committed to greater environmental responsibility, CLC will work with various entities such as the Facilities Department, Dining Services, Student Clubs, and community partners to develop programs, initiatives, and projects. The goals include:

  • To reduce, reuse, and recycle solid waste.
  • To reduce water and energy use.
  • To reduce the use of hazardous materials and the generation of hazardous waste.
  • To protect and enhance the natural environment of the campus.
  • To purchase reusable, renewable, recyclable, used, and non-toxic materials.
  • To purchase and encourage the use of non-polluting or less polluting forms of transportation.
  • To train staff, student, and faculty in environmental leadership.
  • To raise awareness about the environmental mission in the student and employee orientations and provide outreach on environmental programs to the campus.
  • To encourage and develop environmental studies and research.
  • To integrate environmental education into the teaching and research in all departments at Occidental College.
  • To create campus-community partnerships that can benefit neighboring communities and the region as a whole.
  • To encourage teamwork amongst faculty, administration, staff, and students to create a "greener" campus.
